From 4 April the castle closes at 19:00, with last entry at 18:00, and that long afternoon is the best thing about the season. The gabarres start running from La Roque-Gageac on 1 April and the canoe bases at Vitrac are working, so a morning inside the castle and an afternoon on the water becomes possible for the first time. High summer: July and August
Between 4 July and 30 August the doors open at 09:00 rather than 10:00 and stay open late into the evening; the castle’s own pages disagree about the exact closing, so treat it as a late one and check on the day. That early hour is the answer to everything difficult about summer here. The two upper car parks fill first, the lane up is exposed, and the stone holds the heat by the afternoon. Arrive at nine and you get the terrace nearly to yourself. This is also the only window in which a regional bus stops in the village, roughly July and August, on a timetable worth checking before you rely on it. Every way of arriving.
September and October
The 19:00 closing holds to 30 September, the gabarres run to 31 October, and the valley empties as the French holidays end. From 1 October the castle closes at 18:00. For a visitor who can choose freely, the second half of September is the strongest week-for-week case in the year: long hours, warm water, quiet lanes. Parking is easier too.
Winter: November to March
Nothing closes. From 2 November the castle shuts at 17:00, and the Christmas and New Year fortnight from 19 December runs to 18:00; the published bands resume on 7 February. The river trips do not operate, the village is largely residents, and the castle is stone and unheated, so this is a visit for a coat and dry boots.
