Beynac-et-Cazenac is a village of 555 people on the north bank of the Dordogne, in the south-east of the Dordogne département. The castle sits directly above it on the cliff, and Castelnaud faces it from the far bank — the two are usually visited together. The village is one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and a Villes et Villages Fleuris commune: cobbled lanes, quarters called barris, golden-stone houses from the twelfth century onwards, and a market on Monday mornings in summer. Getting to it
Sarlat-la-Canéda, about ten kilometres away and under twenty minutes by road, is the base and the nearest railway station, a terminus on two TER lines. The airports used for the Périgord Noir are Bergerac Dordogne Périgord, Brive Vallée Dordogne and Bordeaux-Mérignac, all with car hire. A regional bus reaches the village in high summer only.
