Groups of fewer than 25 pay the flat fee and arrange the visit by e-mail with the castle beforehand, and the guided visit is given in more than one language. Everyone else simply arrives: there is no slot to hold and none to miss, on any day of the year.
What the ticket covers
Three things, per the listing’s own inclusion list: the castle itself, the exhibition “Beynac in the time of Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine”, and the bookshop. The ticket is valid one day from first use, so a visit can be split around lunch in the village. What you walk through is the barbican and its double walls, the hall of the guards, the Salle des États du Périgord where the four barons of Périgord met in the 15th century, the oratory with its frescoed Last Supper and Pietà, the 17th-century apartments with their painted ceilings, the 13th-century kitchen with its bread oven, the twelfth-century keep, and the spur terrace. The commentary runs on your phone
Audio commentary is included in the price and downloaded to your own phone at the entrance, in several languages. There is no device to hire and nothing to hand back, which also means a flat battery is a silent visit; charge before you set off, or bring a power bank. The castle states plainly that it is not suitable for visitors with reduced mobility: many steps, uneven floors and a spiral stair. The walk up and what the interior asks of you sets out what that means in practice, and the private tour is the option that handles the approach by car.
